In situations like the SD 302 having only a 3.5mm jack for its headphones, I
like to make up a short right angle 3.5 mm jack to 1/4 inch TRS stereo socket.
I then leave that permanently plugged into the device and plug my headphones
into the socket on the end of this lead. That way the socket on the device does
not get 'over used' and if I forget and walk away with my headphones attached
they usually come unplugged before anything disastrous happens.

I have only just got a 302 and my only miss giving is the headphone socket, I
too wish it
was 1/4" much more robust. But having said that, I have dismantled the unit for
a repair
and I can tell you that here simply is no room what-so-ever to fit one. That
box is a feat
of engineering, I have never seen such a full box before.

PS: Just in case you are concerned by the word repair, it had received a knock
and one of
the pots was misaligned, I just had the straighten it. Word of Warning: Do not
attempt to
open the case without help from Sound Devices or you could easily end up with a
none
working 302!
