Your # 1 recording is of Great Horned Owls, both parent and young, i
bet they sounded cool in the night at Muir Woods...
#2, hmmm! You say birds running up and down the bark, i thought
nuthatches until i heard the sound and instantly dismissed them, to me
they sound like alarm calls of winter wrens and Dark-eyed Juncos, they
are very close to a winter wren / Dark-eyed Junco but the behavior you
describe kinda throws me a little.

I say :1 ) Great-horned owl /Owlets
            2) Winter Wren/Dark-eyed Junco alarm calls
