the Korg MR-1000 is an interesting machine, disappointing for some
features, exciting for others.
for all those are interested in ultrasounds beyond 80 kHz there is an
interesting trick...
the MR-1000 can sample at 2.8 or 5.6 MHz and the DSD stream has a
very wide bandwidth, eventually limited by analog front ends (analog
input and analog output) and internal (user selectable) digital
filters on the output.
by running at 5.6 MHz and setting the output filters to flat I
measured an almost flat frequency response till 250kHz, but with
increased background noise above 40-50 kHz. the background noise
reduces the available dynamic range to values comparable to a 11-12 bit AD.
unfortunately the Audiogate software can't convert to PCM at 384 kHz
(but Korg engineers could easily add this option). While waiting for
an improved Audiogate version, with a simple trick you can fool
Audiogate to produce a 384kHz .wav file.
here the steps (I'll publish further details soon):
record DSD at 5.6 Mhz
copy the DSD file to PC
edit the header to change the sample rate from 5.6 to 2.8 Mhz
use Audiogate to convert to 192 kHz PCM wav file
change the wav file header from 192 to 384 kHz
et voila'... you have a wav file with near 180 kHz flat bandwidth!
if you can face with increased noise above 40-50 kHz you can enjoy a
180 kHz recorder!
