The bird was very close, hence the good quality. I wanted to try the FR-LE2 because with more distant vocalizations one either has to turn up the gain to the point where there is much hiss, or the signal is so small it's lost in the minimal hiss one gets anyway. I don't really understant much of the technical aspects of all this. The FR-LE2 doesn't seem to have an obvious advantage in less hiss than the Marantz PMD-671 that I've used up to now.
