Greg,

Your second mystery sound is not a frog but rather a beetle. I think
it is one of the pine borer beetles (pine sawyer). Lang Elliott has an
example of this sound on one of his tapes or CD's ("Sounds of the
North Woods" I think, or perhaps "Sounds of the Night").

I have recorded a very similar sound at Congaree National Park in
South Carolina, coming from the Southern Pine Borer beetle. It is a
very loud sound coming from an infected pine tree, presumably made by
the beetle as it munches!
