I've listened to this again and think my error was in the placing of
the mic, so I've put it back to the original. The one with the r
channel phase reversed (in software) is at

http://www.suffolkbirds.co.uk/audio/T443lr_trimf_rinv.mp3

the original which I first posted is

http://www.suffolkbirds.co.uk/audio/T443lr_trimf.mp3

I had to recreate that from the source as I overwrote the first MP3 I
uploaded from work.

when you look at the original on a stereo display/vectorscope there
is a lot of action on the L-R axis which looks like there is a phase
reversal. I recorded this using a MKH30/40 and did the MS2LR
conversion using Foobar2k and that lovely VST plugin the Richard
Humphries posted recently - now I can preview my MS originals and
hear them right using fb2k without decoding them.

When John posted it was out of phase I assumed the plugin had done
that so I inverted the R and uploaded that. Listening to that
properly, I prefer the original - the stereo seems better to me. So
I've swapped it back

When I recorded these I stumbled out of bed at 3:30 and pointed the
mic in a rather daft position, parallel to the house to minimise the
road noise so I thought. Most of the birds will have been on one
side, and the road is also on the same side away from the house. So
John's observation of the excessive L-R is because of the lopsided
positioning.

I've rigged the mic in the same place today and done a walkaround
test. The vectorscope shows the same apparent out-of-phaseness on the
background noise and when I call out L and R but behaves correctly
when I call out the middle. So I think the hardware and software is
working okay. But the mic location stank. I've learned something
there :)
