I believe I have heard something like that yes, but never so close and clear as that. I would have been a bit freaked out were I that close to a strike. I believe just the sound wave [thunder] of a strike can actually do damage if you are close enough [shock wave]. I wonder if the mini pre-strikes come that much earlier due to the varying speed of sound [due to inconsistent density of air over the various paths taken from exploding air to ear] or for some other reason.
