Hi All

Thanks enormously for your replies!

>From the info I've received it's clear that the Zoom H4 is not a good option.

Balanced XLR inputs are also not vital for someone with my needs.

So the Sony MiniDisc wins round 1.

However, I've discovered that the price of the M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 has
dropped to about US$260, and this is looking to be a good option.

Rec levels are adjustable on the fly (separate controls for L and R) and it has
great dynamic range and sampling rate. It also takes CF cards, which I already
have for my camera. Hassle is that it has a built-in battery that is only good
for 4 hours, but apparently one can get an external AA batt pack that powers
the unit via the USB port for only $15. I'm also not sure how clean its sound
is compared to the MiniDisc.

The other possible contender is the Edirol R-09, but the only advantage that
seems to have over the MicroTrack is removable batteries.

So, we have a three-horse race now:

1) Sony MiniDisc MZ RH1
2) M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96
3) Edirol R-09

Your comments and wisdom please, ladies and gents!

Regards

Adam Welz
