the original recording will safely mask the (ugly) quantization noise
of the 16 bit format.
So, in case the original 24 bit recording has
been made at a very low gain setting, just apply an appropriate amount
of digital gain to the 24 bit file before converting it into the 16
bit format.

mmmhhh.... if 16 bit is "ugly" why not recording at 24 ?

the following statements says what others already stated: 24 bits can
be useful when recording in the field to maintain some headroom for
high levels and not losing details into quantization noise.

then we can maintain 24 bits or normalize and reduce the bit depth to
exploit the dynamic range of 16 bits.

in any case I think it is important to avoid any generalization and
eventually be able to judge case by case if 16 bits are enough or not
for a specific task in a specific context with a specific equipment.

in some cases we get so much noise that 12 bits can be enough, in
other cases more than 16 are required.

it is also important to consider that we talk about 24 bits, but very
few very good converters coupled with very good analog electronics
can go beyond 20 true bits.
