The Soundman DR2 is scheduled to be released to the public in May, so no one has formed an opinion from hands-on experience. The DR2 has a microphone input. That's pretty unusual for an inexpensive (about $200) recorder these days. Most have line in only. The mic input also can supply plug-in power for mics, although this probably will drain the single AAA battery pretty quickly. The DR2 appears to have 2GB of internal Flash memory only, and no removable memory. So recordings will need to be transferred to a PC after 3 hours of 16/44.1 WAV recording. Most of the time this will pose no problem, but for an extended outing, it's probably not enough memory. It remains to be seen how noisy the DR2's preamps are, and how difficult it is to manipulate the user interface to create recordings. --oryoki |
