Sound Devices is reporting that firmware will be available soon for the 7xx recorders: "This new firmware adds several important new features, including FLAC lossless audio compression, MP3 recording, and multi-unit linking enhancements." The new firmware will be previewed at the NAB2007 conference, starting next week. FLAC typically compresses WAV files 30% to 50%, depending on the material. This makes the 702 Compactflash recorder even more attractive as a main recorder, since your 16GB flash card now will hold the equivalent of 23GB of WAV files (or more). --oryoki |
