The stock Crown SASS is about 21-22dBA self noise. I do have one here
but never use it. It's also not as sensitive as the Mod SASS with the
MKH-20s, or that could be that you can safely apply a lot more gain. I
know I can use the Mod for greater distance. In any case, the Mod SASS
is a entirely different mic in character from the original model, though
they do have a lot in common.

You can use the stock SASS in nature recording but only in louder sites
where quiet ambiance is not a issue.

I've seen them go for about $400 on ebay, sometimes less, sometimes
more. A lot of variation.

A slightly cheaper alternative to the MKH-20 Mod uses the AT3032 mics.
Definitely better than the original, not quite as good as the MKH-20.
