Well this is where I have been lately.
Building the sound portion of an exhibit for the Education and Visitor
Center at my favorite recording venue.
http://www.crexmeadows.org/
I did the sound design, installation, recording, editing, etc for
their new exhibit.
The exhibit is divided into the three main areas of the wildlife
management area. Brush Prairie, Sedge Marsh, Open Marshland. This is
an area that is not undisturbed, rather it is managed for the
maximizing of wildlife. Funded over the longhaul by hunters the
exhibit includes a recreation of an old hunting shack. Most contents
donated by the locals and it even has a 65lb Punt Gun from the old
days of duck hunting. Fire, logging, water diversion and all other
tools available are used in this area. Over 90% of all critter calls
used in the sound exhibit were recorded within Crex land. Just
outside the area is the site of Peet, WI. My namesake, where there are
no longer any buildings, but is still known as having the first female
postmaster in the US. The only evidence left of the town is the Peet
cemetery.
Back to Natural Sound. The exhibit was built around four DVD players
and amps.
6 front channels make up the main sound field. The video and its audio
is the 4th DVD player. The center channel of the 6 front channels and
video is routed to headphones to give area sound with narrative.
Surround channels are used for specialty channels. There is a speaker
under the Sharp-tailed Grouse and under a Sandhill crane. The video
front channel is played to a 32" parabolic 20' overhead of the video
screen. One large sub-bass is located hidden under the landform.
Sound activated by motion detection and the interface to the DVD
players was custom designed and built by me. Still plenty of room for
expansion. I can see that this will remain a work in progress for me
for some time with further expansion by additional use of surround
channels.
