What is your ideal "final product?' There are many including:

(a) On-line sharing of MP3's (Often low to
moderate fidelity headphones and speakers)
(b) On-Line and Audio CD playback on
near-reference quality headphones, iPods and
moderate quality home stereo playback (perhaps
like a $300USD+ compact "bookshelf" system).
(c) Expensive home speaker (audio and/or video) systems (~$1000USD minimum)
(d) Very Expensive, top of the line reference
quality studio monitoring ($2000USD minimum)

What kind of monitoring equipment do you have now?

suggest. These might provide a good start.
