hello naturerecordists,
This is a short update on xeno-canto, the community website on
neotropical bird song, found at www.xeno-canto.org.
Over the last few months the collection got a good boost from a number
of new recordists. Just over 100 recordists contribute now. Allen
Chartier added over 900 recordings from around the continent, one of the
largest contributions to date. Xeno-canto now holds over 9300 recordings
of no less than 2500 species: over 60% of all species in the region.
Some of the "best" (i.e. rare or just very difficult to record) species
that have been added include three (!) species of Neomorphus
Ground-Cuckoo, Minais-Gerais Tyrannulet, Fuertes's (Indigo-winged)
Parrot, Yellow-eared Parrot, Blue-billed Currasow and Kaempfer's
Tody-Tyrant.
We have introduced Species Overview pages, showing which populations
and/or subspecies are currently featured in the collection, and bringing
sonograms of different populations together for easy comparison.
As always, everyone is invited to join and share some recordings. Baja,
the Caribbean and Patagonia are especially poorly represented, as are
Hummers, Swifts and seabirds.
cheers!
Bob Planque and Willem-Pier Vellinga
