Right. While both Mini R82 and 744t have four analog line inputs,
they have only two mic preamps.

The cheapest solution for true 4 channel mic recording is the $1200
Edirol R-4. The R-4 has four mic preamps behind its XLR ports. The
R4 can record four channels digitized at 24/96 to its internal 40GB
hard disc.

Here's the link to the Edirol web page for the R-4:

Edirol recently introduced the R-4 Pro. The Pro version adds the
ability to receive SMPTE time code, a connector for the Anton Bauer
style external battery pack, 4 AES/EBU digital inputs, and an 80GB
hard disc. The Pro sports an all-black plastic case, too. The R-4 Pro
costs about $2000.

Here's a link to information about the R-4 Pro:

Doug Oade will upgrade the R-4 preamps for $500. Oade has lots of
experience modifying the standalone Edirol UA5 preamp, so I expect the
Oade-modified R-4 will have a much lower noise floor and nicer
sounding pre's. (I will let someone else buy one and send it to Rob D!)

$2500 for a pro-style four channel 24/96 field recorder is pretty
reasonable, when you consider the price of alternatives from HHb,
Zaxcom and Aaton.
