Thanks oryoki.

What was happening, opening a .wav link in my e-mail program opened in
default with windows media player. All other files were ok; I have fiddled
about with the media player options not to accept .wav files...

You are a great source of information mate :-)

One quick workaround:
The web browsers I use open a link when I left click,
and offer a dialog including "save link as" when I
right click on a hyperlink like the one above.

A longer road to a solution:
To solve the problem you'll have to find where
your web browser stores settings for the action to
take when a specific file type is about to be
downloaded.

I use Mozilla Firefox most of the time. To change how
Firefox handles a file type, I look in the
Tools/Options/Downloads menu.

First I look to see if "Show Download Manager when a
download begins" is checked. If it is, then I look
in the "Download Actions" section just below for the
"View and Edit Actions" button. Click here to see
the individual rules about how to handle a particular
file type (like WAV). Edit or remove the offending
rule, and your downloads should now ask how to proceed
when you click on a hyperlink to a media file.

If you use Internet Explorer, check this setting:
Tools/Internet Options/Security menu, then click on the
"custom" button at the bottom. Now scroll down to
the "Downloads" section. Under "Automatic prompting
for file downloads" check to see if "Disable" or "Enable"
is checked. I think that setting this to "Enable"
will restore the "save or run" question.
