I've used some of that to put together a calculator to estimate if
the recorder significantly degrades the mic noise, with the specs for
a bunch of common mics built in and a HiMD recorder, SD722 and PMD660
specs.

It's on

What seems to come out of that is minimum sensitivity also seems to
matter in getting a decently modulated recording, with HiMD
performing surprisingly well in terms of noise and sensitivity.

I have to question Shure's specs on the VP88 - it is really so
outlandishly insensitive as they seem to claim compared to anything
else or did I screw up there? I've checked and rechecked this.

I'd love to include the Edirol and the Microtrack, but their
specifications seem written to deliberately conceal both the minimum
level required to achieve 0dBFS and the noise level at that value.
