Here's a set of basic information and links to web sites to help
people choose an inexpensive field recorder. The recorders included are:

-- Sony MZ-RH1 (Hi-MD) $290
-- M-Audio Microtrack 2496 (Compactflash) $330
-- Edirol R-09 (Secure Digital) $350
-- Edirol R-1 (Compactflash) $340
-- Marantz PMD660 (Compactflash) $430 (modified $710)

Any of these machines can be used successfully for field recording.
They work best when your microphones draw power from another source.
