Thank you for the links, I think the Total Recorder will be my 
choice.

I want to open some bird song files from this site in a spectral 
display.

The site has many files available for download but they are Real 
Player files.  I am studying Painted Bunting songs and there is a 
total of 80 recordings of that bird on the site.
