Hi Patrick, really sorry to hear your sad fish story. Since ATRAC/HiMD is a closed, proprietary format, my guess is only Sony can tell you why their gear does such an awful, stupid thing. I often find when writing such long posts to public lists that the answer lies in my question already. It simply sounds to me like it's time to go shopping for a new recorder!
