Sony and Marantz recently stopped manufacturing the cassette tape machines so commonly used for field research 10 to 15 years ago (Sony TCM-5000EV and TC-D5 ProII, Marantz PMD222 and PMD430, etc.) You can still find used units on eBay, and some retailers may have a couple in the back room somewhere. Even the repair companies don't want to work on them any more. An inexpensive Hi-MD minidisc machine is better than a cassette tape machine in every way -- wider dynamic range, better frequency response, smaller, lighter, uses batteries more sparingly, more durable recording medium, and so on. The only feature found in the cassette tape machines that is missing in a Hi-MD recorder is a built-in speaker that is loud enough to be used in playback experiments. You'll have to use an external speaker. --oryoki |
