best to use name-brand, expensive DVD discs, not bargain brands

Subject: best to use name-brand, expensive DVD discs, not bargain brands
Number One above is the deal-killer for me. A small portable storage
device containing a hard disc with up to 120GB capacity (sometimes
called a PSD) is many times faster making a copy of your CF card
contents. Figure less than 10 minutes to copy 4GB from CF card to a
PSD, and 30 to 45 minutes to burn a DVD. You can easily copy your CF
card to a PSD while taking a break or eating lunch. Not so the DVD
burner.

My current favorite PSD is the Hyperdrive HD80, which has the ability
to run off AA batteries and rechargeables. The Nexto is slightly
faster, and is a little smaller, but it uses a proprietary lithium-ion
battery that can't be replaced in the field.

The Hyperdrive with 60gb hard disc costs less than $250. If you have
a spare drive from a notebook computer, you can order the Hyperdrive
without hard disc for $150.

I think the DVD burner is a good solution if you can wait until you're
back in the hotel, with mains power and a level surface to put the
burner on. It's not so good if you need to transfer files in the field.

If you're planning to purchase a DVD burner, make sure it has the
capacity to prompt you to insert a new DVD when the one in the burner
is full.
