Here's another alternative for an inexpensive field recorder.
A few weeks ago I wrote a note describing the iRiver H120, an
iPod-style music player that also has the ability to record WAV files
in 16/44.1 Group participant Julius Thyssen replied that he has
successfully used the H120 in the field. (See Message 21469 and replies.)
This week, new iRiver H120 units began appearing on eBay at very low
prices. A refurbished unit used to cost $275. Today, a new H120 with
90 day warranty costs $175 or less. That's a terrific price for a
machine as capable as the H120, particularly when equipped with the
Rockbox software.
Are the H120's preamps as good as a $175 minidisc recorder? No. But
with mics that have a hot output, or a subject that is pretty loud,
the H120 will do fine.
