Sounds like the heads have been knocked out of alignment.
contact your local sony shop re: repairs.
The monitor out while recording is pre tape, ie: it's just a e-e=20
monitor and not off tape thats why
everything seems fine while listening through headphones.
I have a tape that won't playback through my D-8 , it's there but=20
needs the playback deck to be tweeked, I'm in no hurry so haven't=20
gone down that road yet.
