In the last week I have made it through the entire length of WI.
Yesterday Curt of this group and myself left MSP and arrived Crex
Meadows, Grantsburg at "dark thirty" and 22 degrees f.
Ice is leaving quickly now. Some of the larger lakes still have
enough to support groups of Eagles out feeding on it. The edges are
now open and supporting good duck diversity. Large groups of Tundra
swans seen migrating over. Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter swans, and
Loons are arriving on breeding territory but not yet in full numbers.
Just the early sparrows are in with the Juncos in full mating calls.
First small group of Wood frogs found yesterday starting at 44 degree
air temp. Also found were Western Chorus and lesser numbers of Spring
Peepers. Wood frogs should peak next week on a warm day.
The ice was melting fast enough to cause large amounts of water
through the water diversion structures that are used for waterfowl
management.
At one of these structures we found the outlet belching out 4' bubbles
that splashed over 4' into the air. It is not easy to record large
water events but Curt did it great. Best played with speaker that can
handle good bass because we could feel the land shake when these
bubbles came out.
