The new MZ-RH1 is looking like a solid upgrade to the MZ-RH10.
A fellow who posts to mdcenter.nl had the opportunity to test
the MZ-RH1. His report, with photos and a video, can be found
at http://tinyurl.com/facyu
Some highlights of the mdcenter.nl report:
--RH1 remembers recording settings.
When you change the recording level from AGC to manual, the RH1
keeps this setting even after changing discs or turning the
recorder off. The RH10 does not remember. RH1 does lose its
settings when removing/disconnecting the Li-ION battery.
--RH1 mic sensitivity and recording level can be adjusted while
recording without the need to pause or stop. The RH10 has
this ability, too.
--RH1 has date and time stamp function, RH10 does not.
--RH1 uploads data from Hi-MD to Windows about twice as
fast as RH10 can (USB 2.0 vs USB 1.1).
--RH1's Li-Ion battery is charged via USB only; there is no
input for mains power. USB connection should allow the use of
a small battery box to extend the Li-Ion battery's life.
--Software for Mac included with RH1 has more features than
software available with MZ-M1 and MZ-M100
(no details provided on this point).
The RH1 displays information on a long and narrow electroluminescent
screen on the top of the unit. Most other minidisc machines have the
screen on the front of the recorder. (The only exception I can think
of is the much larger HHB Portadisc). Whether this will be practical
for field recording is an open question at this point.
