Hi Graham,

I would recommend the following components:

Microphone:
Sennheiser K6(P)/ME66 with windshield MZW66pro
and/or
Parabola Telinga Universal with Sennheiser K6/ME62 or
an integrated Telinga Science for phantom power supply

Recorder:
TASCAM HD-P2
http://www.avisoft.com/HD-P2.pdf
or
Marantz PMD 671
http://www.avisoft.com/PMD671.pdf

Because these recorders already produce .wav files, an external PC
sound card is not required (the CF cards in these recorders appear
to the PC as common mass storage devices). You might perhaps buy an
external CF card reader (less than 15 $) if you want to upload the
recordings without the recorder.

Headphones:
SONY MDR-V150

You might also have a look at the following website for further
hints on recording gear:
http://www.avisoft.com/tutorial_field_recording.htm

If you still have enough funds, you might also consider to buy a
complete basket windshield / suspension / pistol grip (Sennheiser
MZH 60-1 + MZW 60-1 + MZS 20-1). These (unfortunately expensive)
parts have been originally designed for the Sennheiser MKH60, but
will also work with the K6(P)/ME66.

Best regards,
Raimund
