Need some quick advice on buying recording equipment for students

Hello,

It seems we have some money to spend - as long as we spend it quickly. I
would like to buy some good but not excessive, sound recording equipment fo=
r
my students - the main purpose will be for project work with birds.

I think I would prefer one of the CF card based recorders - but open to
advice. I personally find minidsic recorders fiddly to use and I would
prefer something with chunkier controls. It needs to be pretty robust.

A Sennheiser rifle mike seems an obvious choice but the Telinga parabolic
kit also looks good.

I'm not sure about head phones.

An external sound card for exsiting PCs is probably the other bit of kit we
will need.

I could also possibly look at two kits - one for class room use, and one fo=
r
students doing dissertations.

Would anyone be willing to suggest a shopping list, I would rather spend
more time on this researching the options properely, but I need to get the
order in within the next few days.

many thanks,

Graham
