Since it was me who first suggested trying a parametric equalizer, I
thought I should at least try to give an example. I'm sure it could be
done better by someone with more experience, but this is best I could
come up with:

With those settings, I found it to help a little with the hiss you
were concerned about, but mostly with the motor or generator hum.
