Seasons greetings! I'll stop hanging back and hang up some opinions.

Dunno about quiet, but they're smaller, they're gentle on
phantom power supplies (SD722), and I can't tell any difference
beteen them and the Earthworks SROs. I think they're a bargain
for pro omni's (and the NT-1As are cardiod, so they have bass
rolloff and wind sensitivity drawbacks -- you'd have to go to NT-2As
to get omni, and that's way more $s. If you've already got NT-1As,
I heartily recommend adding the AT3032s to your kit.

I'd rule out the R-1 forever -- I've got one, and even as a saftey
recorder now backing up SD722 (yes, I've run them both), the R-1
has way more drawbacks than advantages.

And one thing about minidisc, which I used for years for my weekly
radio show. Track editing is a lot easier using split/join and
just scrubbing the playback point and listening. I now use an
Alesis Masterlink for the radio show, and it has the same split/
join editing paradidgm, and when recording will split tracks
on the fly by hitting the record button (R-1 won't, DAT will).
For performance music, I just split a few seconds after the
beginning and end of each song, and later just back up from
each track, split at the "right" point, and join the frag
to the right track.

Now with the SD722 and R-1, I can load tracks into my computer
very quickly (if I've got free disk space!), but then I have
to load the tracks into an audio editor and either set marks
and use a multi-split function (if the editor has it) or cut
and paste between tracks, or save selections. So far, I've
found this hard to do, especially since the buffered data
and the new tracks take up even more disk space. So the
advantage of see the waveform on the computer and zooming
in to get an exact split point is offset by the tedious
process and work flow. Maybe I need a better editor, but
so far I haven't found one on the Mac.

This I'll leave to others to discuss since all I have in
small mics is panasonic DIY mics.
