Nothing too surprising. The Rane Notes 148 chart
http://www.rane.com/note148.html translates mic self noise into pre
noise floor equivalents (without the additional 10dB(A) separation).
We'd be looking at an EIN of ~ -127dBU for a Rode NT1-A, or -123dBU
for an MKH-20. Test-wise, the 744 and 722 seemed to be perfectly
transparent with the NT1-A's. To my ears, the HiMD pres I've tested
are on the cusp-- which might put HiMD mic pre's EIN around -123 to
-125dBU. If the Rane chart and the recorders manuf's specs are
correct, any recorder with a EIN of -123dBU or higher (negative)
number would be transparent to an MKH-20 at 10dB(A) self noise. I'd
guess the Fostex F2, the HHB Portadisc is on the list with other
fairly expensive machines. Folks can consult their owners' manuals.
But remember, as Klas points out, mic pre such performance is only
relevant for the lowest noise mics we have at our disposal. An MD
recorder's pre is not likely to detract from the performance of a
ME-67. Rob D.
