This statement is incorrect. All Sony Hi-MD recorders offer the
choice of recording in WAV format. For example, check page 34 in the
MZ-MH910 manual, where it explains how to choose between recording modes:
linear PCM -- 16/44.1 WAV, records for 94 minutes per Hi-MD disc
Hi-SP -- 256 kbit ATRAC3plus, records 475 minutes per Hi-MD disc
Hi-LP -- 64 kbit ATRAC3plus, records 2040 minutes per Hi-MD disc

Manuals for all Sony Hi-MD recorders are available online at
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=3DDOCS

I think the quoted statement above refers to how Sony's Sonic Stage
software, running on a PC, converts a variety of audio formats to
ATRAC for playback.
