That's about double the cost of a Sony Hi-MD
recorder and a Rolls phantom power box.<<<<

Considering that a new PMD-660 off the shelf is around $425 this is a
whopping price to upgrade the pre-amps etc...

The Oade web site has recordings of the
PMD660 pre- and post-mod. See URL
http://www.oade.com/digital_recorders/hard_disc_recorders/PMD-660MODS.html

The links to download WAV and FLAC files
are at the bottom of the page.

The PMD660 with the "Advanced MOD" costs $709.

Nature recordists should avoid the Oade "Concert MOD"
versions, which are designed to allow recording
very high sound pressure levels without clipping.
(Unless you need to record high SPL -- cicadas,
waterfalls, lightning strikes, wildebeast stampedes...)
