I was at first perplexed by the question.  Equivalent in what sense?  The
closest equivalent to the mkh-30 is the Schoeps MK-8.  But then I realized
that your friend is probably looking for equivalent performance, but at a
lower price.  That doesn't really exist, but he might consider the
combination of the AKG SE300 body and the CK 94 figure-of-eight capsule.
That will probably run around $600 -$700.  But the self-noise of that
microphone really isn't in the same category as the other two.  It's spec'd
at 22 dBA, whereas the Sennheiser mkh-30 is 13 dBA and the Schoeps MK-8 is
18 dBA

I haven't used it though.  I haven't even had my hands on one.

I'm interested in hearing what other suggestions folks may have.  There
aren't enough figure-of-eight microphones out there, especially inexpensive
small-diaphragm types.
