Dear all,

I work for the conservation of whales and dolphins in a very narrow body
of water found between the islands of Negros and Cebu here in the
Philippines known as the Ta=F1on Strait. It is a cetacean conservation
priority site where 11 out of 24 of our cetacean species can be found.
It is also a site which is now subject to oil exploration by the
Philippine Government and the Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. Ltd.
(JAPEX). In the next two weeks, seismic surveys will be done in the
northern portion of the strait as a preliminary for the exploration. The
provinces of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental (which border the
western side of the strait) apparently do not know anything about these
activities and only found out about the survey through flyers which were
distributed this week to the maritime offices in the area.

The following information was given:

SAFETY NOTICE TO MARINERS

The seismic vessel R/V Veritas Searcher will be carrying out a seismic
survey in Ta=F1on Strait between Cebu and Negros Islands on behalf of the
Philippine Government and JAPEX starting around 2nd week May 2005 that
will last for approximately 15 days.

The R/V Veritas Searcher, assisted by support vessels M/V Philippine Sea
and M/V Renegade, will be travelling at a constant speed of 5.0 knots
whilst towing a single 3.3 km steel cable at a depth of 6 meters below
sea level. Attached at the end of the cable is a yellow float equipped
with a flashing light.

During the survey, the R/V Veritas Searcher is extremely restricted in
her ability to maneuver and cannot stop.

For safety reasons, all fishing vessels, passenger ferries and
commercial vessels are requested to stay 5 kilometers away from the R/V
Veritas Searcher to avoid damage to these vessels and fishing equipment.

Does anyone have any information on the effects a survey of this nature
could have on cetaceans? The species found in Ta=F1on include spinner
dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins,
Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, Fraser's dolphins, Risso's dolphins,
melonheaded whales, false killer whales, pygmy killer whales, dwarf
sperm whales and pilot whales.

Responses would be most appreciated!
