Jake,
You have to record it from different perspectives - far-field,
mid-field, near-field - and mix all of the elements according to the
illusion you wish to create and your taste. Best to record one that
is not particularly thunderous. Stick to the medium ones. The
illusion of thunder and size can be created by control of level.
