I am not Rob but will inject.
I use >45 db "signal to noise" to rate a md recording as a "A"
recording in species specific work.
"A" =3D a "contender" recording that is better than most published, and
often analog, recordings of individuals.
"B" =3D the "usual" published individual call recording.
"C" =3D defective in some way.
In ambience recordings I use a subjective approach as I have not
found a way to quantify these yet as sometimes I like wind and a very
low s/n.
In species recordings, 20 db gain from the preamp is often good.
Often my +60 db pre is not enough in the ambience I record and this
is where I get into trouble with the md.
