This is the area where the environmental capabilities of the MKH mics
shine.

One of the ways the pros do it is to place a bunch of layers of "hogs
hair" over the mic. It does not have to be on the mic, just over. That's
the material you can find sometimes for heat system filters or
evaporative coolers, stays stiff when wet and is pretty open. You need a
thick layer to break up the raindrops quietly. If the mic is to be out
long, you'd have to have a water diverter of some kind under that. This
works very well, but is very cumbersome to set up. And even worse to
take down and transport wet.

Some will just put the mic out with a zepplin, with or without the fur
cover. As long as it does not get too saturated it won't be too bad on
the sound and will generally keep the mic dry. Kind of expensive if you
ruin the windscreen. I've done this is misty rain for short periods.
Again more of a problem after to dry everything.

I've generally tried to find some cover in the area. Under thick trees
stays dry for quite a while unless it's really pouring. It helps that I
use Portabrace cases for my Portadisc and MP2, so they can take quite a bit=
.

As Bernie noted, you do have to decide the sort of focus you are after
and record that.

The SASS/MKH-110 I have works well with thunderstorms. Lots of low
frequency content in them that most mics don't handle well. I'm still on
the prowl for just the right mix of thunderstorms and frogs.
