Thanks to Henry, Rob and "digidandy" for your replies to my questions
yesterday.

Too darn bad about Sony being unfriendly with Macs; I'm not exactly
surprised. Still, there's enough else to like about Sony Hi-MD that Mac
incompatibility might not be an absolute deal breaker. From what you
all are saying, it sounds like in linear PCM mode Hi-MD prints some
kind of proprietary file type to the media that requires Sony's PC-only
software to convert it into a usable .WAV file? Is that right?

Rob, I'll check out the forums you mentioned. Thank you.

Henry suggested the Matantz PMD-660. My immediate question would be
about powering low-voltage electrets like our new best friends, the
Sure 183s. I seem to recall Dan Dugan indicating that this gets rather
complicated with genuine pro mic connections. Dan?
