I wanted to post a brief message of public thanks to Aaron Ximm whose
elegant website QuietAmerican.org got me started recording several years
ago. It is a rich website and in it I stumbled into an amazing concept
for a visual guy who had previously shot thousands of 35 mm slides on
his trips. Aaron observed that a sound recording of an event may be
more evocative (memorable / emotionally rich) than a visual record.
This stunned me...what a possibility !........and so I tested the idea
by recording here and there on several trips (one to Europe and 2
backpacking in the North Cascades) both in sound and in pictures and to
my amazement ....he was right about the sound being more evocative. My
camera still accompanies me but I take fewer shots and .......now I also
bring my recording setup (minidisk in an otter box with binaural mics
in the side of the box). It has added a new layer of quality to my life
And on the subject of earth hum.........A couple of years ago I went to
talk at the North Rim by a Geologist who had spent two months walking
the length of the Grand Canyon on foot by himself. He commented late in
the talk, something which intrigued me......he said that as he got west
in the canyon away from virtually any noise, that he slowly became aware
of a definite but almost not there....hum.........he thought for days
that it was just the flow of blood in his ears but after studying over
and over, he judged it was external to him and might represent the
friction of the air against the turning of the earth !!.........
