Out in the blackness recording frogs tonight I recorded a new sound, or at least new to my night recording forays. I'm very familiar with the sound from daytime. To the peaceful sounds of upland chorus frogs was added the soothing sound of a chainsaw, out in the distant darkness somewhere, many hours after sunset, someone was clearly cutting firewood. The visions of what you can do with a chainsaw when you can't see what it's cutting danced in my head. The direction of the sound was all darkness, and a wildlife preserve for a fair ways. The sound continued for about 20 minutes before shutting off as abruptly as it came. And the upland chorus frogs continued their song.
