Hi! I hope you can help me out with this. I have heard this sound all my
life and it is my favourite nature sound, but i don't know know what makes
it.

I live in upstate New York, between Albany and the Massachusetts border.

I hear this sound mostly when i drive by fields at night. But also out
outside my windows. I live in somewhat of a forested area, but with a
clearing where my house is.

It is only at night usually starting in early or mid august and going maybe
about a month. It heralds the fall.

It is a medium pitch "ritch-ritch" sometimes in threes "ritch-ritch-ritch"
and it alternates with silence. about 1-2 seconds of silence between each
set. They don't seem to sing in groups, but sometimes you can hear another
one much further away. Usually i only hear one.

I know someone out there knows what this sound is!! And i'm dying to know!
I hope you can help me. Thanks very much!! --Carol Avitable
