Subject: Spruce grouse?
I did not receive any information about the date and location for your
observation on Tweeters so it is difficult for me to evaluate the
observation on that basis alone. In any case, the pictures are clearly of =
a
female spruce grouse (age difficult to know without information on timing,
but not an obvious juvenile). The vocalization is also clearly that of a
female (probably of breeding age). Females usually utter this call when
they interact with other females (it has an aggressive purpose). I would
love to get more information about this observation regardless of what the
records committee thinks. I have worked on grouse for more than 20 years
including research on spruce grouse.
