I'd kind of expect different mic. Anyway, don't stop researching mics,
you will probably outgrow what you have fairly soon once you start
recording.

As far as a gain stage, I kind of view that as only really useful with
fairly high end mics. Probably less important than researching mics.

Your best bet for finding out what you need is to get out and record.
You need to gain experience to keep from making too many bad choices in
equipment. You grow your equipment from experience. Anyway, that's
probably the cheapest way, coupled with research, asking questions, as
you are doing.
