Practical software

Hello, Cooledit 2000 (US$70)is gone! What is there to replace it 
with?

I had been absent for more than a year and now I come back looking 
for something similar to the good old Cooledit 2000.  Adobe Audition 
is expensive and an overkill! I  welcome all advice on any software 
that offer similar options as the ones syntrillium used to, like 
Cooledit LITE ($30) or CE2000. 
In short, what can I get for under $100?
