Yes I have built around this chip. I did not look but recall making
a reference to it within the first 5 posts I ever made to this
group. I have been looking for my extras in the bottom of a drawer
to play more now that I have some equipment worth comparing it to.=20
When I ordered them last there was a $25 or $50 minimum. The chip
does play well and don't think for a min that the pro equipment does
not center around large scale inexspensive chips.

The down side of the chip is that you need two 9volt batteries for it
to fly in its simple setup. You can get by without the in line caps
if you trust yourself and others never to hit the phantom power
switch.

I have only used it in unbalanced configuration. It did not occur to
me that the reference pin could be considered a - to use as a
balanced output. I still have not thought that out to convince
myself that it would work that way.

I found it better not to use a pot for the gain but instead cascade
metal film resisters with on/off switches for a limited number of
gain settings.

As soon as you make the plung to have a box big enough for two 9v
batteries than you will easily decide that you need the LM3916 in
that box too.

For your application you also need to run a drawing by an engineer to
determine if you have enough static protection. I am not good enough
to advise on that but can tell you I just ran the normal two caps
across the battery for rf protection and ignored the rest.
