Equipment to record nature sounds?

Hi,
Just joined this group.  I have a babbling brook/waterfalls alongside my
house.  I'd like to record the sound along with the occasional birds
singing.  I make/burn VCDs of white squirrels and would like to upload the
brook/bird sounds to my PC and then add them as background sounds to the
white squirrel VCD.  I'm looking at the Marantz PMD670 and would appreciate
any input into this costly or any other less costly alternatives.
