I need some help from the birders of this list, I was out at a place called
Cougar mountain this morning, not much happening and it was extremely quiet=
,
I got this call from a distance, like a hoot, definitely NOT an owl but you
can also here a slight cluck or quack sound, Cougar mountain is in the hear=
t
of Issaquah, Washington.

Now, I believe this is the call of a Mountain Quail? But!!! There are no
records of quails (mountain) here and I believe they do not come this far
north of the Pacific Northwest? What do you think?

Recorded at about 8:45am TEMP 41F with Telinga stereo dat mic onto HHB-500.
(23.92sec MP3)

Subject: PreAmp Parabola question?

I just bought a Telinga Pro 5 Twin Science Parabola a little bit
ago. A few days ago I received an HX-3 Headphone Preamp by Sound
Devices. This little Amp really opened up a new world of sound that
I find very cool! I enjoy listing to the surroundings outside. In
the summer and fall I want to bring the Parabola to some local
sporting events, softball games, a few local football games etc.,
just to hear some of the action on the field. At the moment the HX-
3 has a Max of 34dB gain.
You can see the specs on the HX-3 at this link..
http://www.sounddevices.com/products/hx3master.htm .
However, I think I want a more powerful Preamp but I have little
experience in world of Monitoring Sounds. Please keep in Mind I
have No interest in recording the stuff I hear. I just like to go
out side and point the dish in all the directions to see whatI can
pick up that sounds interesting. I want to receive sounds that are
more faint out in the distance etc.=20
I was strongly thinking of upgrading to slightly stronger Preamp the
MM-1 also by Sound Devices which has a max 66dB of gain. You can
see the specs of the MM-1 at this link
http://www.sounddevices.com/products/mm1master.htm .=20
To be honest I am not completely sure how much of an improvement
the MM-1 would be over the HX-3 in terms of picking up faint sounds
farther in the distance, or just sounds that are more faint period.
I thought that before I made my next move I would bring my question
before some of the Pro's:)
Also, if anyone has a better suggestion on a different Preamp, or
has any advice that they could shed some light on, Please feel free
to do so!=20
Thanks you very much,
jlink
