The ME series come in two pieces: 1) a base with XLR connector and room for
a battery and 2) a capsule that screws on to the base.
The base (K6) can be used with different capsules. It can also be used with
phantom power (ie w/o a battery in it). But without a K6 like gadget,
there's no good way to connect a wire to the capsule.

I've read that there are some "2nd party" K6 analogs that might be a little
less expensive, but don't know anything about them.

As an additional bit of info for your deliberations, I've always had
extremely good customer (and equipment) service from Sennheiser, and this
value of this support has been more than enough for me to stick with the K6
rather than shopping for something a little less expensive.

Cheers!
